I got a call last night out of the blue from a family friend who has (at best) a passing interest in V8 Supercars. The shortened version of the conversation (expletives removed) was "what are they doing letting Jap crap into our Aussie touring car series".

Public perceptions are already radically polarised on this one.

I didn't really have an issue with Chrysler coming in because it's already a 4 door, rear wheel drive, v8. I can't say I'd like it if Nissan had to mix and match bits from other cars to produce something that complies with the rules. That said, if they are going to release a 4 door, rear wheel drive, v8 here in Australia, then good luck to them entering.]]>

Would the Altima be to small to fit the COTF specs, or could it stretch to fit?
Or could they be planning to use a RHD version of the USA Maxima?

So many questions, and too many continents to consider - V8 Supercars isn't just an Aussie game now.]]>

In fairness to Youlden, the 2010 incident was caused by the delaminating tyre.

He's one of the better co-driver IMO, it's just that he seems to share FPR's Bathurst luck. He's usually gone well at Phillip Island and had podiums at both endurance races in 2003 with Ellery.

TWR did not become the Holden Racing Team. HRT was originally formed as a joint venture between TWR and Holden as a marketing tool for HSV (which is why the team was originally known as Special Vehicles Racing). The name 'Holden Racing Team' was then adapted in 1990 following a reshuffle of the team. While TWR was a major part in the formation of and owned HRT for quite a while, it was never a part of HRT's lineage.

Back to the topic at hand, I would love to see Nissan win Bathurst and the Championship in 2013 - would be quite ironic if that twenty years after the first season the GT-R was disallowed, Nissan come back and beat Holden and Ford again!!]]>

They only sell it as a Maxima in New Zealand and Australia, they sell the actual model overseas but it's under different model names (eg. Cefiro, Teana).

I hope whatever they run has some sort of 'sporting pretensions' (which obviously wouldn't be the maxima). Kellys eye snatching factory Holden deal

Kelly Racing’s new CEO John Crennan has outlined his plan to snatch the factory Holden support from the Holden Racing Team.

Amid speculation that the third-year V8 team would be one of the outfits to switch to a non-Ford/Holden car maker when the Car of the Future regulations are enforced in 2013, Crennan says that the team’s first preference is to remain with Holden – and become Holden’s official team.

“We want to stay loyal to Holden,” Crennan told weekly motorsport magazine Auto Action.

“There seems to be an enormous amount of keenness on behalf of V8 Supercars and certain powerbrokers pushing the barrow that we should be getting involved with another manufacturer, because we have superb facilities and no manufacturer deal.

“I’m getting tired of these people putting out this line – it would disturb our goal of replacing HRT as the main Holden team at the end of their contract.”

Auto Action states that Walkinshaw Racing’s deal to be the factory Holden Racing Team ends at the end of the 2012 season.

Walkinshaw Racing’s factory deal with Holden was renewed in the days following TeamVodafone’s defection to Holden in July 2009.

For the past two seasons, Kelly Racing has not receive significant financial backing from GM Holden.

Kelly Racing was formed in 2009 as a four car team. In two and a half year, it has taken two wins and eight podiums.

The Toll Holden Racing Team was established in 1990 and has taken six driver’s titles (1996, 98, 99, 2000, 01, 02), and six Bathurst 1000 victories (1990, 96, 2001, 02, 05, 09).

The Japanese manufacturer made the announcement in a press conference at Melbourne’s Crown Casino this morning.

Nissan is the first manufacturer to confirm its entry into the sport under the new for 2013 Car of the Future regulations.

It is not yet known which Nissan model will be used in the V8 Supercars program.

Kelly Racing will be known as Nissan Motorsport from 2013, with all four of its cars expected to carry factory Nissan colours.

The team will continue to develop its own chassis and engines from its Braeside, Melbourne, base, but will do so with input from Nissan’s global performance arm NISMO.

Nissan Australia managing director Dan Thompson said that the V8 Supercars program will play an important role in the company’s future in the country.

“Nissan believes that, alongside Ford and Holden, we possess the most convincing motorsport DNA and track history in Australia, making a V8 Supercars debut in 2013 an obvious initiative,” said Thompson.
nissan2 Nissan confirms Kelly Racing V8 Supercars entry

The announcement being made at Crown Casino

“We are targeting No.1 importer status in Australia and already making progress towards that as one of the country’s fastest growing brands. V8 Supercars will boost that momentum.”

Kelly Racing driver and co-owner Rick Kelly says that the new deal is an important step in the team’s plan to become a dominant force in V8 Supercars.

“I couldn’t be more excited with the opportunity Nissan has offered Todd, myself and the entire team at Kelly Racing to become their official factory team,” he said.

“Nissan’s genuine enthusiasm, unwavering support and absolute professionalism through this evaluation has been tremendous and underpins their absolute intentions of Championship success in the category – a dream we share and hope to deliver on.

“This new partnership has only been made possible by the endless amount of hard work that John Crennan has done for Kelly Racing on this project, and that of Ian Moreillon, Jeff Fisher and the team at Nissan of which Todd and I are very grateful.

“The Nissan Car of the Future (COTF) project is a huge undertaking however Todd and I are firmly focused on the job at hand this season ensuring that Kelly Racing takes those important steps forward on and off the race track.

“Development of our cars and recruitment of key personnel in the off-season should assist us to realise these immediate goals.

“This new partnership brings with it a host of opportunities for the team, our business partners and of course fans and delivers the vision that we have shared since our inception in the category in 2009.”

Nissan Australia will return to racing next year with a full factory-backed entry in V8 Supercars with Kelly Racing.
To be announced in Melbourne tomorrow morning, the family-owned Kelly outfit will be rebranded Nissan Motorsport and field as many as four official entries.
The cars will run in primarily Nissan livery – normally red, white and blue – that incorporates other team sponsors.
Still to be decided is what Nissan model the Car Of The Future-spec V8 racers will emulate, with candidates ranging from the Maxima large car to the Japanese-market four-door Skyline to the mid-size Altima or Primera.
Enginewise, it’s understood Nissan Oz and Kelly Racing will develop a localised version of one of the company’s existing racing V8s, with input from the NISMO motor sport division in Japan.
The unexpectedly full-frontal factory deal ends the two-decade Ford/Holden duopoly in V8 racing.
Ironically, Nissan’s last involvement in Australian touring car racing was with the category-killing “Godzilla” Skyline GT-R, the early 1990s domination of which prompted the switch to the V8 Commodores and Falcons that have reigned since 1994.

NISSAN is set to be a shock inclusion on the V8 Supercars grid next year with powerhouse Japanese manufacturer to announce tomorrow it will be taking the fight to Holden and Ford.

In an historic inclusion which V8 Supercars claim will bulletproof the future of the sport, Nissan have agreed to re-join the series in 2013 in a move which will inject hundreds of thousand of dollars into the sport and place a wedge between the iconic battle between Holden and Ford.

The bombshell entry will also give several lowly placed teams the ammunition to take on the likes of Holden backed team Vodafone, with the manufacturer to pull out the cheque book in a bid to upset their manufacturing rivals.

Made possible by the Car of the Future program headed by Holden legend Mark Skaife, the coup has been three years in the making.

News Limited also understands the announcement, to be made by V8 Supercars and Nissan tomorrow at Crown Casino in Melbourne, will be the first of many.

Several other manufacturers, including Chrysler, have been in talks with the fast growing series and are also expected to join the Aussie bred fight.

Both Holden and Ford have welcomed the new competition with Nissan’s inclusion likely to help address the uneven split which this year saw 17 Commodores taken on 11 Falcons.

Holden backed driver Jamie Whincup won the series.

Nissan were last in the series in 1992, with the manufacturer ironically supporting Skaife, the man who helped court them back after a 20 year absence.

Car of the Future has helped make Nissan’s inclusion possible with a host of control parts to be used next year.

Chairman of V8 Supercars Tony Cochrane, CEO David Malone and several special unnamed guests will make the announcement at 11.00am at Crown Casino tomorrow (Thursday February 9).

Although V8 Supercars officials won’t comment on the nature of the announcement, the release says it “is years in the planning and is certain to surprise”.

It is believed the announcement could relate to new manufacturers entering V8 Supercars in 2013 with the Car of the Future regulations.

As revealed exclusively by V8X, Chrysler is examining the possibility of entering V8 Supercars with a number of teams linked to negotiations with new manufacturers.

CLICK HERE for V8X’s original article on Chrysler’s interest in V8 Supercars.

It was at Crown Casino in March, 2010 that V8 Supercars announced the Car of the Future implementation which it said would "open the shop front" to new manufacturers.

Cochrane and Car of the Future architect Mark Skaife have repeatedly stated that new manufacturers were on the brink of entering V8 Supercars from 2013.

The media conference will also be streamed live on V8 Supercars' website, on Telstra T-Box and available on Telstra mobiles.

In regards to the commentators, Skaife, Crompton and Larkham only do the V8s so it would be likely that they head over to the station that gets the TV rights.

On another note, would it be possible for the station that gets the TV rights to show some classic races from the past on non-race weekends.]]>

I'm a bit concerned about the potential for different broadcasters for different events. I can see one time commentators just nuffing up names and stuff that drives us purists mad.

And V8 races always finish on time right? This comment made me very nervous;

Jordan wrote:

"They could go straight from one to the other."

For that reason I hope Nine don't get it and it goes back to Ten (where it belongs)!]]>

Channel Nine have held talks with V8 Supercar officials as a $300 million television war is brewing between the three major free-to-air networks.

As a landmark Federal Court ruling threatens to eat into the media deals of the NRL and AFL, The Sunday Telegraph has learned that both Nine and Ten are considering bids to snare the V8 Supercars series from Seven.

It could cost $300 million over five years to claim the rights to televise Australia's fastest growing sport.

The deal with Seven, which was an estimated $168 million over six years, ends this year.

"Nine are definitely interested and we are talking to them," a well-placed V8 official said. "All of the major free-to-air networks are interested, as is pay TV."

And The Sunday Telegraph can also reveal that V8 Supercars would be willing to sell off its properties separately in a bid to grab more cash in the next television deal.

This could mean that a blue-chip event like Bathurst could be sold to one network, with another picking up the rest of the series.

"Everything is up for grabs," the insider said.

"We will consider any offers. We would look to sell all the rights, including digital, to just one network, or split up all the properties.

"It is all about getting the best deal."

Locked in a war to retain the NRL at an estimated cost of up to $1.4 billion over five years, Nine have expressed interest in also going after V8 Supercars. Both the current television rights deals for the NRL and V8 Supercars expire this year.

"Nine are interested because it is a good fit for them," the V8 insider said.

"The timing of our races works for them and especially in winter. Our races finish by four, and that is when their coverage of the NRL starts.

"They could go straight from one to the other."

As with the NRL and AFL, V8 Supercars could be affected by the court ruling which gave telecommunications company Optus the right to broadcast live sport with a short delay.

It is understood Telstra, which is at the centre of the dispute, already pays about $5 million a year for the digital rights to V8 Supercars.

New V8 Supercars CEO David Malone, former head of Premier Media Group, confirmed the widespread interest in the rights for his sport.

"We are very encouraged with the interest in the market," Malone said. "It is early days, but we have started the conversations. We believe we have a high-value product and have a tremendous ratings record. We also have the product and brand.

"We are very optimistic."

Malone also said he would support Telstra in their fight against Optus.

He agreed with the views of NRL boss David Gallop, who last week condemned the Federal Court ruling.

"I think this is only the beginning of this matter," Malone said.

That's funny, I could've sworn there was an article on Speedcafe regarding who the driver was this morning...

Former Audi sportscar and DTM pilot Alexandre Premat is set to join Garry Rogers Motorsport for the 2012 V8 Supercars Championship.

Much speculation has surrounded the #33 Fujitsu Racing entry since erstwhile driver Lee Holdsworth announced a switch to IRWIN Racing last year.

Revealing his new signing to Sydney newspaper The Daily Telegraph, team owner Garry Rogers explained that he felt choosing a young driver to fill the seat was too risky.

“Some will see it as a shock and a major risk but I really think he (Premat) is the man for the job,” Rogers told the paper.

“My team has had a lot of success with our young driver program over the years but you no longer can afford the time and results that come with the inexperienced drivers.

“You need drivers who have a solid knowledge of the technical attributes of these cars and who are able to drive them very fast every lap.”

Hailing from Essonne, France, Premat is a previous winner of the Macau Grand Prix (2004), the A1 Grand Prix Series (2005/06) and the Le Mans Series (2008).

Premat spent four seasons in the DTM from 2007, recording a best race result of third and a best points finish of 10th.

He was eventually let go by Audi in unusual circumstances, having been found competing in the New York Marathon while supposedly recovering from a sizeable crash at the previous DTM event.

Premat spent 2011 driving sportscars for OAK Racing, and had pushed hard to be among BMW’s driver line-up for its return to the DTM this season.

Although Premat will become the first Frenchman to race V8 Supercars full-time, his home nation boasts two previous race winners in Yvan Muller (2005 Sandown 500) and Sebastien Bourdais (2011 Armor All Gold Coast 600 Race 21).

GRM goes overseas for their 2012 driver

I'm pretty sure no-one saw that coming, quite a surprising move really considering the talent available in Australia/NZ. I'm not sure I totally agree with him when he suggests that he can't find someone with these skills in Australia:

You need drivers who have a solid knowledge of the technical attributes of these cars and who are able to drive them very fast every lap.

I certainly would have thought Mr A. Davison would have fitted that bill to an extent, more so than someone from DTM.]]>

ORIGINAL RICHARDS CARS RESTORED TO ORIGINAL LIVERIES FOR 2012 SEASON

A pair of teams in this year's Kumho Tyres V8 Touring Car Series will pay special tribute to former V8 Supercar driver Jason Richards across the six-round national series in 2012.

The teams will race Holden Commodores in the series for deregistered V8 Supercars, though as a special tribute both will run them in original livery - as raced by Richards - specifically for this season.

THR Developments in Adelaide and Poll Performance Racing in Sydney both own cars formerly raced by Richards, who passed away in December from a rare form of cancer.

The THR team have Richards' 2003 #45 Team Dynamik Commodore VY, which is probably best remembered for the popular Kiwi barrel-rolling it at Pukekohe in New Zealand that season.

It was restored last year to its original livery and will race in the same white, red and black colours.

"Time is getting away from us for the first round at Eastern Creek in March, but we fully intend to race the car this season," says THR Developments co-owner Nick Taddeo.

"We will keep the same livery on the car as Jason raced it – it was always our intention to do that.

"Whoever ends up driving the car during the season, their own sponsor will fit them around the existing livery as best as we can manage it.

"We're waiting on a few engine parts, but we've pulled the car down to a bare shell and want to make sure it's 100 percent and ready to go."

Jim Pollicina's Poll Performance team in Sydney has the Commodore that Richards raced late in the 2006 V8 Supercars Championship for Tasman Motorsport.

The Sydney driver is returning it to the orange and black base livery it carried when it debuted that year at Symmons Plains in Tasmania.

"With the passing of JR, I thought it timely as a tribute to a nice bloke," said Pollicina.

The opening round of the 2012 Kumho Tyres V8 Touring Car Series will be at Sydney's Eastern Creek Raceway on March 9-11 as part of the Shannons Nationals.
