Jamie Whincup is still holding out hope of getting more time in a McLaren Mercedes F1 car in Europe later this year.
Whincup was treated to driving a couple of laps in Jenson Button’s F1 car in the lead up to the Australian Grand Prix in March while Button drove Whincup’s V8 Supercar in a cool switcheroo organised by a mutual team sponsor of the V8 and F1 teams.
McLaren made an offer for Whincup to drive the car again in England and the double V8 Supercar Champion says the offer still stands.
“Yes it’s still on the cards but I really don’t like talking too much about it because if it doesn’t come off for some reason then it’s a lot of talk about nothing,” Whincup said.
Whincup cut a few laps in a McLaren around the Albert Park circuit and had impressed those in the Anglo-German squad with his natural flair.
And another offer is on the table for Whincup to drive another car overseas, possibly a DTM Mercedes in Germany.
“There is another opportunity that has arisen through one of our team sponsors to drive another car overseas,” a guarded Whincup said.
Whincup has also made public his passion to one day get behind the wheel of a NASCAR.
But he remains cautious of letting his mind wonder and compromise his effort to claim three consecutive V8 Supercar championships this year.
Whincup received a rare invitation to race in the International Race of Champions at the Olympic stadium in Beijing last year but decided to relinquish the offer to concentrate on cementing his second successive Championship.
“I haven’t heard anything about another invitation this year but I have kind of learnt a lesson because our season is still going when the Race of Champions is on,” Whincup said.
“It’s okay for all of the other drivers from the high profile categories because their seasons have finished.”
