If the V8 Supercars end up racing in Singapore in 2011 it is likely to be a non-Championship event.
Both V8 Supercars Australia Chairman Tony Cochrane and CEO Martin Whitaker have indicated numerous times that the category could race in Singapore as early as next year.
It has recently been reported that if the V8 Supercars were to race as a support category at the 2011 Formula One Singapore Grand Prix it would not be part of the V8 Championship.
This would overcome the obstacle of television broadcasting rights, because Network 7 screens all of the V8 Supercar Championship races but Channel 10 owns the Australian rights to Formula One.
It would mark the first time the category will not race for championship points outside of the domestic (Australia and New Zealand) championship.
V8 Supercars Australia (V8SA) said the 2011 Championship calendar will be released in October, a month later than usual to finalise discussions with CAMS and the FIA “that are integral to the future growth of the Championship”.
While Singapore is understood to be part of these discussions, V8SA has refused to speculate on the 2011 calendar before its release around the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.
Singapore GP Chairman, Teo Hock Seng, was unavailable for comment when contacted by BigPond Sport but V8 Supercars CEO, Martin Whitaker, told V8X magazine that with V8 Supercars’ proven Rock N Race formula “they want us to go there”.
“What’s really interesting is they want more expertise in running the entertainment element that goes hand-in-hand with a street race,” he said.
“It’s everything that goes with it; it’s the street party culture that brings the city alive for the duration of the race meeting.”
F1 CEO, Bernie Ecclestone, was keen to get to get the V8s to Singapore as a support category, according to Whitaker.
“He’d love to have us there in an earlier timeslot. It’s better for the spectators, better for the city and puts an extra four hours on to the show as far as Singapore is concerned.”
Whitaker acknowledged the television rights issue was “clearly one of the things we would have to work at” before the V8 Supercars hit Asia again.
“It’s clearly part of the negotiation.”

Oh great here we go again maybe another overseas event and it looks likely to be a non-championship event
I do hope this is not going to happen
But it would give the V8Supercars some great coverage if they where the support category I guess
Thoughts anyone on this ???
