After being expelled from the 2010 calendar, Perth’s V8 Supercar event at Barbagallo Raceway is set to crack an exciting new long-term deal.
V8 Supercars Chief Executive, Martin Whitaker, confirmed that the 2011 Championship will visit every state in Australia.
When pressed about an announcement on the fate of WA, Whitaker said confirmation was imminent.
“As we’ve said all along we are on track to make an announcement by the end of July,” Whitaker said.
“I’ve made it clear in the office that we need to get Townsville out of the way first.”
Perth’s future has been rescued with the WA Government believed to have satisfied V8 Supercars by committing funding to a major redevelopment of the Barbagallo circuit and pit facilities.
“Perth is not only good for our fans but also for our major sponsors and we all want to keep WA on the calendar,” Whitaker said.
The compilation of the 2011 calendar is not expected to be known until September or October.
Positioning of the Perth round is not known although it is expected to be fitted in around the same time of the cancelled 2010 date of June 4-6.
The pit lane layout has long presented serious occupational health and safety issues.
The WA government is expected to tip in $5million initially to commence an upgrade at Barbagallo and more funds are expected to be directed toward the track in the coming years.
In the absence of a WA event, many of the V8 Supercar teams fulfilled sponsor commitments and travelled to Perth this year to complete corporate ride days in between the Winton and Darwin events
