Indianapolis Cup Race Cautions
Lap 1 -- YELLOW FLAG NO. 1: That didn't take long. Sam Hornish Jr., Reed Sorenson took the worst of a collision on the first lap, with David Reutimann, Todd Bodine and Kyle Busch also being roped into it. There's minor damage to Busch's 18 car, but Hornish's No. 77 took some serious damage to the rear. Lap 16 -- YELLOW FLAG NO. 2: Back under yellow. Robby Gordon tore up the front end of his car, and Max Papis also has some damage. Lap 66 -- YELLOW FLAG NO. 3: Debris in Turn 2 brings out another caution, helping Juan Montoya's case as he was nearly going to have to pit under green. Lap 117 -- YELLOW FLAG NO. 4: Debris coming out of Turn 2 brings out the yellow, as what appears to be some sheet metal flew up and hit Ryan Newman's car. Lap 138 -- CAUTION FLAG NO. 5: Debris brings out another caution and will bunch the field back up. Lap 146 -- YELLOW FLAG NO. 6 AND LEAD CHANGE: Just as Kevin Harvick got around Jamie McMurray for the lead, Chip Ganassi saw problems for his other car as well. Juan Montoya got loose and into the wall, and he collected Dale Earnhardt Jr. as he dropped down the track. |

Indianapolis Cup Pit Action
Lap 2 -- Elliott Sadler's crew heads back to the garage as he's on his way after that melee. Marcos Ambrose also pitted to clean off his grill. Lap 7 -- Sam Hornish Jr. is being penalized for speeding on pit road, so they're using the time to continue working on the car. Juan Montoya has opted to take the inside line on the restart. Lap 12 -- Carl Edwards is on pit road for an unscheduled stop, saying his temperature is spiking, and Ryan Newman is back on pit road for another left rear flat. Denny Hamlin is also on pit road, facing some overheating issues as water spurts out from under his hood. A.J. Allmendinger is also on pit road. Lap 13 -- Carl Edwards remained on the lead lap after only having to have tape removed for the heat. Brad Keselowski is on pit road and taking four tires. Lap 15 -- Ryan Newman's team reports it was a fender rub causing the flats, but they think they've fixed it now. Dale Earnhardt Jr. hits pit road, also battling the overheating that has struck so many. Lap 17 -- Cars hit pit road. • Tony Stewart takes four tires and fuel • Mark Martin gets a wedge adjustment • Jimmie Johnson takes right-side tires only • Juan Montoya takes two tires, fuel and a grill cleaning Lap 18 -- LEAD CHANGE: Landon Cassill takes the lead when Juan Montoya takes to pit road. Lap 23 -- Joey Logano moved up to 14th with a pit stop for just fuel, but he's being passed willy-nilly now as cars with fresher tires get around him. Clint Bowyer moves up to 10th by passing Kasey Kahne. Lap 39 -- LEAD CHANGE: Mark Martin takes the lead when Juan Montoya hits pit road to have his crew take a look at the vibration he's feeling. He takes four tires. Lap 41 -- Juan Montoya is back out on the track, showing up in 30th position after that unscheduled pit stop. The Busch brothers are back-to-back, with Kyle in 12th and Kurt in 13th. Lap 49 -- LEAD CHANGE: Greg Biffle takes the lead when Mark Martin hits pit road under green. • Mark Martin takes four tires and fuel • Jimmie Johnson gets four tires and fuel • Jamie McMurray has a track bar adjustment • Kevin Harvick gets four tires and fuel • Jeff Burton takes four tires and fuel • Jeff Gordon takes a major air pressure adjustment along with tires and fuel Lap 50 -- LEAD CHANGE: Tony Stewart takes the lead when Greg Biffle hits pit road. • Greg Biffle gets four tires and fuel • Carl Edwards takes four tires and fuel Lap 52 -- LEAD CHANGE: Juan Montoya back to the lead after Tony Stewart gets onto pit road. • Stewart gets a wedge adjustment, four tires and fuel Lap 53 -- The top five after green flag stops cycled through: 1. Juan Montoya 2. Greg Biffle 3. Mark Martin 4. Clint Bowyer 5. Jamie McMurray Lap 56 -- Greg Biffle is the fastest car in the top 10, making up ground on Juan Montoya. Montoya will have to pit sooner, since his stop for the vibration came about 11 laps before the others started their green-flag stops. Lap 57 -- Jeff Gordon is down to 13th, and has yet to see if the adjustments his team made on his pit stop will pay off. Kevin Harvick Lap 106 -- Greg Biffle telling his crew chief he hopes that pit stop doesn't cost him the victory, with Greg Erwin saying they weren't trying to avoid Juan Montoya but trying to pit with Clint Bowyer and Kevin Harvick and those guys. They weren't expecting Brad Keselowski to pit with them. Lap 119 -- The leaders are on pit road. • Mark Martin got another adjustment, four tires and fuel • Clint Bowyer got four tires • Greg Biffle got both track bar and wedge adjustments • Juan Montoya took no adjustments, just tires and fuel • Jimmie Johnson is changing out shocks on his car Lap 120 -- Jimmie Johnson's stop took too long, and he was passed while on pit road, so he goes a lap down. The disappointment is obvious in Chad Knaus' voice. Lap 140 -- Pit road stops. • Tony Stewart takes two tires and fuel with a slight trackbar adjustment • Clint Bowyer took four tires and fuel • Jamie McMurray took two tires and fuel • Juan Montoya took four tires and fuel Lap 141 -- LEAD CHANGE: Jamie McMurray gets the lead with two tires. Ambrose, JTG Daugherty to part ways after 2010 Driver unsure of next move, doesn't rule out return to Australia By Sporting News Wire Service July 27, 2010 02:17 PM EDT Marcos Ambrose has decided to leave JTG Daugherty Racing at the end of the season, the team announced Tuesday. Ambrose, in his second full year of Sprint Cup racing for the team, is a disappointing 27th in the standings after finishing 18th last year in his first full season. Ambrose has been with the team for five years -- one season in trucks, two in Nationwide and then two in Cup. Ambrose has recorded five top-five and 10 top-10 finishes in his Cup career, which includes 11 races in 2008. "After five years, I personally felt it was time for a change," Ambrose said. "I have no firm plans of what will come next for me and my career. "I would like to continue in NASCAR and finish off what I started, but I have not discounted returning to Australia. I'm grateful to JTG Daugherty Racing for giving me an opportunity to become a NASCAR driver and I wish them the best in the future." Even though he has "no firm plans," Ambrose is a candidate to replace Kasey Kahne in the No. 9 or Elliott Sadler in the No. 19 at Richard Petty Motorsports, sources close to the situation said. Kahne announced he would leave RPM in April and that he had signed to drive the No. 5 car for Hendrick Motorsports beginning in 2012. Sadler announced earlier this month he would not return to RPM. Neither has announced plans for 2011. With a career-best second at Watkins Glen last year, Ambrose nearly pulled off his first career Cup win at Infineon Raceway last month but accidentally stalled his car while trying to save fuel late in the race. Ambrose has two Nationwide victories, both at Watkins Glen, driving for JTG Daugherty Racing. JTG Daugherty Racing is an affiliate of Michael Waltrip Racing and is based at the MWR shop. Team co-owner Tad Geschickter made the move to Cup with Ambrose after several years in the Nationwide Series. "Marcos is a friend, and he is a great talent," Geschickter said. "He will be an asset to his next team. While we hate to see him move on at the end of the season, we will remain focused on winning races with Marcos." JTG did not say who would replace Ambrose in its No. 47 Toyota but said it would make an announcement in the "near future" concerning its driver for 2011. tough call for ambrose. hope fully he gets picked up by another cup team, maybe replacing elliot sadler. www.nascar.com/2010/news/headlines/cup/0...part.ways/index.html |

Ambrose denies Petty Ford deal done Wednesday 28th July, 2010 Author: SpeedCafe © Australian NASCAR driver Marcos Ambrose has hit out at reports that he has already signed for Ford team Richard Petty Motorsports for next season. Ambrose will leave JTG Daugherty Racing at the end of the 2010 season, despite behind contracted to the team until the end of 2011. Ambrose has been linked to a return to the Ford fold next season, with some reports suggesting that a deal with RPM, which this season fields four Roush-aligned Ford Fusions in the Sprint Cup Series, was already done. Appearing on ESPN NASCAR Now, Ambrose hit back at reports that he has a deal for 2011 with RPM. “I can completely debunk that story,” Ambrose told ESPN NASCAR Now. “There is no deal for me in 2011 as we sit here today. “I haven’t even really thought about too much apart from trying to make sure that once we make this announcement today that we get the message out there that we are going to finish things off the right way. “So there is no sponsor swaps, there is no drive or ride confirmed for me for next year at this point. None of that is true. “What is true today is that at the end of the 2010 season I am a free agent but we are really focused on right now finishing off 2010 with JTG the right way and trying to win some races. “We’ve got some great races coming up with Watkins Glen, Montreal, Bristol, Talladega, so I really am focused right now so that the transition for JTG for their next driver is done the right way for the right reasons. “I’m sorry Marty (Smith, ESPN NASCAR reporter), but your information is very inaccurate.” Upon his entry into the NASCAR ranks in 2006, Ambrose’s progress was personally overseen by two of Ford Racing’s most respected and influential figures, Ford Racing boss Dan Davis and his marketing chief John Szymanski. And in his three seasons aboard Fords from 2006 to 2008, a noted fan of Ambrose was Jack Roush, who was privately displeased when the Australian ended up in Toyota equipment in 2009. A move to RPM, which has its workshop near the Roush Fenway Racing operation and shares engines and technology with the leading Ford squad, would see Ambrose back in Ford machinery and within Roush’s sphere of control. “Sure, I’ve been a Ford driver for many years before I came to America and Ford was one of the reasons why I became a NASCAR driver in the first place,” Ambrose told ESPN NASCAR Now. “John Szymanski and Dan Davis from Ford Racing really helped me get the association with JTG in the very, very beginning. “Now I’ve been with JTG for five years, it’s been a great journey together. I just felt that it was time for a change. “Sometimes change is good, I felt a little stale, I’ve got my own personal reasons why I made this choice and it has been a very personal choice for me about this. “Tad and Jodi Geschicker are good friends of mine, as to is Brad (Daugherty), and we’ve worked through this stuff over the last couple of months and we’re at the point today we are going to announce that I am not going to drive for them in 2011. “It doesn’t take away from what I’ve got in the future – at this point I don’t know. I could be racing NASCAR, I’d like to be. I’ve got unfinished business in the sport. “I could be returning to Australia and racing V8 Supercars, I could be racing lawn mowers. I really don’t know what’s in front of me but at this point, just getting to today was a big step and I’m going to take a few days to really collect my thoughts and catch my breath and see what shakes out.” Ambrose saw the news of his split from JTG Daugherty Racing after five seasons as a positive step for both parties. “Change is good, I feel like you’ve got to keep moving forward and changing things up,” Ambrose told ESPN NASCAR Now. “It’s a great home here at JTG, we’re good friends, but its no secret we’ve had a rough 2010 and I feel like the directions we are heading are slightly different. “I just want to make sure I don’t impede JTG’s progress to the next level. I had one year to go on my existing contact and we’ve just fast-forwarded that so that we can all go our own ways and do it the right way. “We’re good friends, we are going to be good friends long after all this settles down, but there is no secret surprise at the back door here. It’s just basically my choice to try to change things up and I feel that the timing is right for me and it’s been a personal choice.” JTG Daugherty Racing co-owner and ESPN NASCAR analyst Brad Daugherty said that talks between Ambrose and the team about parting ways had been ongoing for months and that it was a case of both parties wanting to move in different directions. “We had talks in the past about heading in a different direction,” said Daugherty. “We hope that everything works out for Marcos. Sounds like he’s got some opportunities that may play out.” Richard Petty Motorsport currently fields Sprint Cup entries for Kasey Kahne (#9), Elliott Sadler (#19), AJ Allmendinger (#43) and Paul Menard (#98). Kahne has confirmed that he will be leaving the team at the end of this season as he searches for a one-year home ahead of replacing Mark Martin in the #5 Chevrolet at Hendrick Motorsports in 2012. Budweiser, current sponsor of Kahne’s #9 Ford, is rumoured to be leaving to join Kevin Harvick at Richard Childress Racing. RPM is rumoured to be aiming to retain Allmendinger and Menard, although Menard is said to be shopping around his driving services, which are coupled with lucrative family-owned Menards hardware chain sponsorship. Sadler has admitted publically that he is unlikely to be re-signed by RPM. Richard Petty Motorsports is majority owned by sporting entrepreneur George Gillett, a part owner of the Liverpool Football Club in the English Premier League and former owner of the Montreal Canadians NHL ice hockey team. While the team carries the name of the most successful driver in NASCAR history, Richard ‘The King’ Petty is largely used as the public figurehead of the team, with Gillett’s son Foster Gillett heading up management of the organisation |
